When: TUESDAY AUGUST 9th, 2016 How much: $30 or $25 for seniors and students (or book Tuesday October 4th Kamloops ArtBus Tour as well to receive $5 off) A Look at the Day... On our 3rd ArtBus gallery tour we will take a journey through many exhibitions. We’ll see the art, meet the artists and be guided by curators. You might notice that there are many different kinds of galleries and that each works a little differently from another, and maybe you’ve wondered why? We invite you to keep this thought in your mind as we take you through public galleries, commercial galleries and an artist’s collective. As you visit each gallery, how do you feel entering the building? Does it change from one gallery to another? How is the art hung or presented to you? Who decides what art is shown and how? How is the space used? What do the exhibitions communicate to you and how (in addition to the work itself, are there signs, labels, printed materials?) What is the relationship between the gallery and the artists? What is the relationship between the gallery and the viewer? Want to check out more about the galleries we’ll be visiting? As European conceptions of the end of the Earth grew increasingly expansive, Dutch merchants travelled further and further to set up colonies and ports for trade: Indonesia for spices and rare hardwoods, China for tea, silk and porcelain, Brazil for sugar, America for pelts and tobacco, and South Africa for gold and diamonds. Dutch ports in West Africa captured and shipped slaves to work the plantations of the Americas. Dutch art history traditionally focuses on themes indigenous to the Republic’s home shores. The production, exchanges, and influences by their extensive global contact zones however profoundly changed the course art and history in the tiny Republic and contact zones alike. The Lake Country Art Gallery invites you to join art historian Peter Green for an hour and a half long presentation and discussion on this expanding chapter of art historical research. The event will take place Wednesday August 17th at 6pm. Admission is free and open to the public! We hope to see you there! WHEN: Sunday June 26
TIME: 3pm-6pm WHERE: The gardens in front of the Art House TICKETS: $20 ($10 with potluck dish)* - buy yours HERE The Language Cafe is a gathering with community members to share conversations in various languages. Come to chat about the weather in Spanish or marvel at the food in Sign Language. The Language Cafe lets you practice a language you are learning or dust off your mother tongue. There will be flags and once one is placed on a table, that table’s conversation becomes the language of the country it represents. At the same time, some tables will have living books. Our interpretation is based on 'Living Libraries' which have been used since 2001 to create dialogue, promote understanding, and reduce prejudice. As part of our Language Cafe it will be an opportunity to hear stories from those who lived them first-hand. A living, breathing book you can ask questions or just simply listen. There will be up to six ‘human books’ made available for visitors to visit with for up to 10 minutes each. However, rather than having the ‘books’ checked-out (as they would be in a Living Library), the books will host each of their visitors over a cup of tea. Tea and tea culture around the world signifies welcoming, friendship and community. Each book will be responsible for choosing their own tea that speaks to their own culture, history or preference, that can act as an entrypoint for discussion about culture with their guest. *Potluck: Discount on Ticket price if you bring a plate of food to share. Bring a dish from your home, your childhood, your favourite country or your family's most treasured recipe book. |
