Join Hanss Lujan as he explores different worlds of art:

Hanss Lujan is a visual artist and aspiring art historian born and raised in Cusco, Peru currently residing in here in the Okanagan.  He recently graduated from UBC Okanagan with a Fine Arts Degree in Visuals Arts and a Minor in Art History.

He was worked for several art organizations here in the Okanagan, including the Alternator Centre for Contemporary Art, The Kelowna Art Gallery and the Arts Council of the Central Okanagan.

He is thrilled to return to the Lake Country Art Gallery for a series of art history lectures exploring different worlds in art. He invites you to escape the ordinary and explore the wonders of art.


The Unconscious Mind: Surrealist Art 1924-1940

Channel the unconscious as a means to unlock the power of the imagination and explore of one of the most important movements of the 20th century.

Influenced by Andre Breton, Sigmund Freud and Max Ernst, this lecture will look at themes, concepts and techniques manifested in surrealism. 

This lecture will also examine the surrealists’ fascination with the Pacific North West and Latin America.

This art history talk is free and open to the public.

The European Renaissance saw the artist as a seeker of knowledge. Skilled in many fields, these artists were also scientists and inventors interested in philosophy and other aspects of intellectual life.

By looking at Leonardo da Vinci, Fra Angelico, and Albrecht Durer amongst others, we will explore the great social and cultural changes in 15th and 16th century Europe, including the development of perspective, humanism, and apprenticeship and patronage in art.

This art history talk is free and open to the public.

Go on an adventure and uncover the history of an unknown nation.
Join us for a rare presentation on Peruvian art.

Inspired by the traveling exhibit, Peru: Kingdom of the Sun and the Moon organized by the Montréal Museum of Fine Arts, this talk gives an overview of Peruvian culture. From pre-Columbian iconography to the masterpieces of the colonial era, discover the art that forms the national identity of Peru.

*A small collection of Peruvian art will be on display for this not to be missed lecture*

“Kodaking and being Kodaked”: 
Lady Aberdeen’s 1891 photographs of Guisachan

Description: In 1891 Lady Aberdeen took a series of Kodaks of her new property at Guisachan in what is now Kelowna.  This presentation looks at a number of these photos and analyses them in terms of the Aberdeen family’s life at Guisachan. Most of these photos have never been seen before as they are kept in a family album.

BIO: Carolyn MacHardy is Associate Professor of Art History and Visual Culture in the Department of Critical Studies at the University of British Columbia’s Okanagan campus, where she teaches courses in 20th century Canadian and European art history and a course on contemporary global art history.  Her publications include articles and exhibition catalogues on contemporary Canadian artists, including an essay on the work of Lori Mairs for the Lake Country Art Gallery last year, and her paper on Lady Aberdeen’s Guisachan Album will be published this spring in the Journal of Canadian Art History. 

This art history talk is free and open to the public.

Join the Lake Country Art Gallery for our second pub-styled Trivia Night, on Saturday March 1st, from 6 - 9pm. Match wits with your opponents on ART, CULTURE and MORE. Entry is $10 per person to join in the hilarity and brain teasers, as gallery curator Katie Brennan tests your team’s smarts. Snacks and cash bar will be available. All funds go to support the Lake Country Art Gallery. Minimum team size: 3 people. Maximum team size: 8. Exuberant, bizarro team names, and even costumes / teams jerseys are heartily encouraged.
