.11am: Unveiling Ponderosa Sphere by artist David Jacob Harder

David Jacob Harder uses "...the tree and some of its ecological cousins in a wild dialogue about how humans impact nature, even at the unintentional or incidental level but all the way up to the industrial and global economy level. This conversation is a silent one, at least at Harder's end. He is expressing his hypotheses using the voices of art."

This work is my investigation of the interaction between us and animate tissues. Often raw materials are appropriated for our “progress” and made to serve our advancements in technology and engineering. I am interested in this dialogue and how the conversation relies on the fundamentals of bio-mimicry and ultimately change the future of the biosphere.
I use the tissue of the ponderosa pine to speak to the change seen in BC’s interior and the noticeable changes that have ensued in my short lifetime. Throughout the Thompson Okanagan region thousands of these dying and dead trees speckle the hillsides and valley bottoms. This change helps to inform my work and ultimately introduces new topics in my dialogue with the landscape. In the creation of the sphere I look to further investigate the symbol of the bark tissue as a landscape cell unto itself and continue my investigation into the conglomeration of the mechanical and the raw.
The symbol of the sphere allows me to call to mind the planetary concerns of the changing landscape through the implications of shape and form. The round cell also enables me to juxtapose the raw tissue of the tree with the constructed and deliver the concepts into a new territory of contemplation.

11:30am Lake Country Art Gallery for PANCAKE BREAKFAST

CELEBRATE the opening of a NEW EXHIBITION: A RESTLESS EARTH
with guest Curator Hanss Lujan

Hanss invited our Gallery Members to submit artwork based on his theme A Restless Earth. This exhibition is a selection of art from our Member artists that explore current ecological crises. The exhibition  presents a platform for discussion on the Anthropocene—the current ecological epoch that represents humanity’s dominant influence on the planet.

Hanss Lujan is a Peruvian artist, writer and emerging curator living in the Okanagan. Hanss has worked on a variety of exhibitions and projects for galleries in Kelowna including the Kelowna Art Gallery and the Alternator Centre for Contemporary Art. His project research themes include place and cultural identity, globalisation, and socially engaged practices.

1pm Gallery Members are invited to stay for the *Annual General Meeting
