Gallery Members' Exhibition​

​Inspired by the Indigo Girls' iconic song Closer to Fine and the movie Barbie, this exhibition, Closer to Fine An Artistic Journey of Self-Discovery and Meaning in 2025 LC Art Gallery Members’ Exhibition explores the intricate paths of personal growth, the search for meaning, and the beauty of imperfection. 

The Lake Country Art Gallery invites you to submit artwork reflecting your journey and embracing the multifaceted nature of being Closer to Fine.

Popular culture, especially movies, greatly influences art by shaping societal narratives and visual aesthetics. Films reflect and challenge contemporary issues and are echoed by visual artists who explore similar themes and ideas. 

Closer to Fine by the Indigo Girls (1989) is not just a background track in the Barbie movie (2023); it is a thematic anchor that supports the film's messages of empowerment, self-discovery, acceptance of imperfection, and the importance of community. 

One impactful moment in the movie is when Barbie is driving down the road in her convertible, singing along to Closer to Fine, enjoying the moment thoroughly; suddenly, Ken pops up from the back seat. This scene in the Barbie movie, where Ken's uninvited presence disrupts Barbie's joyous and autonomous moment, is a powerful metaphor for the broader issues of male entitlement, the disruption of female autonomy, and the importance of maintaining personal boundaries. It underscores the feminist themes of the film, emphasizing the value of self-discovery and the need for respect and consent in all interactions. This moment invites viewers to reflect on the themes of the song and the film, encouraging deeper contemplation on the art of finding one's path and the beauty of asserting one's individuality.​

closer to fine: Submission Guidelines ​

step one: Intent to Participate


  1. Email the curator directly with your Intent to Participate message with Closer to Fine as the subject line.
  2. Include a brief outline of the planned artwork and images if you have them. NOTE: the planned artwork does not need to be complete before submitting your Intent to Participate.
  3. All forms of art will be considered with the exception of projections due to space limitations.
  4. There are no size limits, however, please let the curator know if the piece measures over 5x5’.
  5. In your Intent to Participate message specify any special equipment requirements (i.e. lighting, electrical, etc).
  6. You may submit more than one artwork but it is the curator’s discretion to decide which pieces to include in the exhibition and how many.
  7. The deadline for the message of Intent to Participate is November 30th, 2024.

step two: Submission Form arrives  for Participating Artists ​

  1. Artists will receive news about their participation during the first week of December.
  2. If your participation is confirmed by the curator, a Submission Form along with delivery dates and exhibition details with be sent to you.
  3. Then, all participating artists are required to write a few words about their artwork and how it relates to the theme of the exhibition. We will inform you on how to submit this text and it will be included with the Submission Form.
  4. We will inform you at this stage about artwork delivery/pickup, artist contracts, opening reception, etc. 

Questions/ Inquiries ​

  1. Please refrain from sending any additional questions/inquiries until after October 1st. As this may hinder the acceptance of your participation. This restriction is in place to be mindful of our curator’s workload and focus regarding other exhibitions. Questions are welcomed after Tuesday, October 1, 2024. Thank-you for understanding.
