This workshop is suitable for complete beginners or for those who have some experience with encaustics but wish to learn more or gain more experience with a variety of techniques.
Equipment available and used in the workshop is: crock pots, hotplates, styluses, irons, torches and heat guns.
The instructor supplies all equipment and supplies, however students may wish to bring
a few things of their own:
- Small objects such as buttons, beads, wire, and fabric for embedding
- Photographs, drawings or photocopies for layering/embedding
- Suitable substrates such as **unprimed wooden panels/cradled panels,
- **unprimed stretched canvas, particle board-type panels, and good quality watercolor or printmaking paper. ** Substrates primed with acrylic-based gesso are incompatible with encaustic mediums
- PearlEx pigment powders
- Pan pastels
- Your own heat gun and/or handheld torch
- Drawing mediums such as graphite and water soluble crayons
The instructor will also have new encaustic supplies and equipment available for students to purchase after the workshop

Lake Country artist Angela Hansen attended the Emily Carr University of Art and
Design where she earned a Bachelor of Design; she then worked as a freelance designer
and in small print shops for a few years before earning her teaching degree from the
University of Victoria. Angela has been an art teacher in the Central Okanagan for the
past 15 years and currently teaches at George Elliot Secondary.
Angela has been working with encaustics for over 10 years and enjoys the diversity of
this intriguing medium. It is warm, luminous, amazingly durable and highly addictive to
work with!
