DAY 1:
As colour is, for me, the most important element in a painting, I shall reinforce some of the most important points of colour and how to use them in a piece for optimum effect. We will go over using only the 3 primaries. I will distribute hand-outs that you can study explaining the colour theories.
We will then do a few exercises using the primaries to make sure we fully understand and are able to utilize these few colours to create a successful piece.
We will also lay down some texture on a canvas in preparation for a completed abstract painting on Day Two. HOWEVER, we should also be able to create a successful piece without relying on texture so we will also start one of these.

I will help guide all of you through to completing (hopefully) two finished abstracts, one with and one without texture.
Supplies:
3 Primaries (all “Golden” brand):
“Quinacridone Magenta”
“Phalo Blue” (GREEN shade) NOT red shade
“Hansa Yellow Mdm
“Quinacridone Crimson”
“Paynes Gray”
“Nickel Azo Yellow”
“Titanium White”
Gac 500 or Matte Medium
Water container & palette
An assortment of brushes – make sure you include some flat angle brushes (preferably not the really stiff white bristle). I find watercolour golden flat angle brushes good.
A few different sizes & shapes of palette knives.
99% Rubbing alcohol (Walmart or a drugstore)
A canvas pad on which to do some exercises the first day.
2 canvases (pls. keep them 16” x 20” or bigger)
“Golden” Gel Medium
“Golden” Polymer Varnish with UVLS (Gloss)
**** As this is the “abstract” course please try and bring as many “bling” colours as you can afford, i.e. the “Interference” and the “Irridescent” colours.
PLEASE NOTE:
I prefer the fluid acrylics and, so far, so do all my students.
HOWEVER, if you already have these colours in the tube form, and if you like to use a palette knife as will as a brush, they will certainly do. Also, please don’t come with just the ONE OUNCE bottles as, using only a few colours you will run out before even finishing a canvas. (8 ounce is the best) but 4 if you can’t find 8.
