Memento, an exhibition of works by students form Lake Country, will run from May 3 to May 31, 2013.

Every year, the Lake Country Art Gallery opens its gallery space to students in Lake Country as a way to further support, engage and foster students' artistic accomplishments.

Memento will showcase both two- and three-dimensional work from the students of Oyama Traditional School, Davidson Road Elementary, Peter Greer Elementary School, and George Elliot Secondary School. This yearʼs show is curated by UBC Okanagan practicum students Kelsie Balehowsky and Lucas Glenn.

Balehowsky also facilitates weekly drop-in workshops at the Gallery as part of the Lake Country Youth Arts Project.

“My goal is to create a place where students can get involved with the local arts community in the Okanagan and learn different mediums of art that are not necessarily available in school. I work to create an environment where students are able to drop in and bring their desires to the table,” said Balehowsky.

Since starting the workshops in October, Balehowsky has brought in local artists such as Wanda Lock, Margaret Kyle, Liz Earl, Kit Bell, and Petrina McNeill to engage students with different mediums. She has also taken students to the Vernon Art Gallery.

Lake Country Art Gallery Curator, Katie Brennan, says she is looking forward to the exhibition.

“Lucas and Kelsie are such capable and inspiring students. They are ideal mentors to work with and build relationships between students of the Lake Country school district, students in the BFA program at UBC Okanagan and the Lake Country Art Gallery,” said Brennan.
