Artist Talk: Wednesday June 29th 5-6pm
Opening Reception: Wednesday June 29th 6-8pm
This exhibition is inspired by three serendipitous artistic encounters, in which the work of each artist was developed discretely from one another, all explore and reposition the use of fabric in contemporary art in fresh and thought provoking ways.
THE ARTISTS:
Esther Gabrielle, a recent BFA graduate from UBCO, combines the process of painting with beautiful vibrant textiles. Gabrielle questions the conventional use of textile and other materials found in the domestic setting.
Gabrielle Strong, a recent graduate from Emily Carr University, creates ceramic works which take the form of slip cast pieces of fabric. Strong 's installation references brushstrokes of the artist's hand, while capturing individual moments frozen in time, never to be repeated the same twice.
Nicole Young, a 2015 BFA graduate from UBCO, makes large abstract paintings but uses repurposed fabrics alongside paint. Young's works are partly narrative and partly documentary. Her combination of paint and fabric in an abstract manner creates a sense of familiarity, space, density, and openness.
