“We do not inherit the earth from our ancestors; we borrow it from our children”

This exhibition invites artists to respond to the environmental changes happening throughout the Okanagan Valley. The past year in the Okanagan brought major flooding throughout the spring resulting in personal property damage and had us thinking about climate change and our relationship to nature. That conversation took on more urgency in the summer months with the lack of rain, forest fires, lost homes and day after day of smoke-filled skies.
This exhibition explores current ecological crises and presents a platform for a discussion on the Anthropocene—the current ecological epoch that represents humanity’s dominant influence on the planet.
Guest curator Hanss Lujan is a Peruvian artist, writer and emerging curator living in the Okanagan. He has worked on a variety of exhibitions and projects for galleries in Kelowna including the Kelowna Art Gallery and the Alternator Centre for Contemporary Art. His project research themes include place and cultural identity, globalization, and socially engaged practices.

Upcoming Events in detail:
Saturday April 7th:
11am: Unveiling of Ponderosa Sphere by David Jacob Harder, adjacent to GESS, 10241 Bottom Wood Lake Rd.
Join the Alternator Centre for Contemporary Art in partnership with the Lake Country Public Art Commission on Saturday April 7 at 11am for the unveiling of a new temporary public art sculpture, Ponderosa Sphere, by BC artist David Jacob Harder.
Ponderosa Sphere, a 10’ orb constructed of metal and ponderosa wood and bark, lets visitors examine the structural poetry of the organic and inorganic. Inspired by the common use of natural materials for advancements in technology and engineering, Harder anchors this exploration to his own observed changes in the Thompson Okanagan landscape over time, and prompts us to consider how the built environment continues to impact the natural life cycle of the natural world around us.
