The Lake Country Art Gallery is proud to present Appearing and Fading - art as exploration a group exhibition with work by local artists Connor Charlesworth, Sarah Cordeaux, Steve Mennie, Stephanie Patsula and Riley Wallis which runs May 20th to July 4, 2015.
Each of these 5 artists are involved in the dance of how things appear and fade depending on how they work with them; the time of day and the mood of the moment, using this play as fodder for patient, curious exploration of the interior of making art.
For Connor Charlesworth, there is an obvious love and seduction at play with paint. There is also a strong affinity to the natural landscape, exploring both wild and domestic spaces. Charlesworth is a recent graduate of the BFA program at UBC Okanagan.
Sarah Cordeaux explores appearing and fading, absence and presence through monotype printmaking. She is interested in just how much, or just how little visual information one needs to create a narrative. Originally from Ontario, Cordeaux currently resides in Kelowna.
Steve Mennie’s work is a direct exploration of “being here”. With roots in highly realistic painting, Mennie’s exploration has led him to explore the means itself - paint, form, line, etc. - via abstract painting. Mennie is based in Salmon Arm.
Stephanie Patsula’s approach is to work with objects directly, both found and constructed. Their placement and subsequent interactions create conversations where only that particular configuration of objects and various materials can describe when arranged together. Patsula, who is currently in Europe installing a new exhibition, resides in Kamloops.
Riley Wallis’ paintings are an exploration of beauty and a reconnection to nature. She derives her imagery directly from small pieces of nature, such as a leaves or petals, taking colour and shape cues from them to weave into abstract works in ink. Like Charlesworth, Wallis is also a recent graduate of the BFA program at UBC Okanagan.
The exhibition runs from May 20th - July 4th, 2015, with an opening reception to take place on Wednesday, May 20th from 6 - 8pm. Admission is free and open to the public.
There will also be an Artist Talk and Discussion on Saturday, May 30th beginning at 3pm. This informal talk and discussion will give an inside look into the process of making these pieces and some background on the previous work of each artist. The artists will be in attendance.
