2021 Youth Employment Opportunities

 Lake Country Art Gallery is hiring for the TWO summer positions this year - pending funding:

1. Art Gallery Assistant
 
We are seeking to fill a full time, seasonal position supported by funding from CSJ Youth Employment program. 
This position of Gallery Assistant creates an opportunity for the right candidate to gain practical experience, receive on-the-job training and mentorship, to develop connections, build networks and improve their chances of finding meaningful employment. This may also lead the way for us to establish our capacity to create an ongoing p/t role for the right candidate. 


  
The Lake Country Art Gallery

Lake Country Art Gallery is the public art gallery in the municipality of Lake Country BC. Entering its eleventh year of operation, this young, dynamic gallery continues to grow and establish itself with quality exhibitions, events and programs that support professional, critical, and community art practices, thereby providing creative contributions to the culture of the Central Okanagan region. The Board of Directors and the Gallery Manager oversee the operations of the art gallery and are guided by a set of core values working with the following mandate.

Job Description
Working with the Gallery Manager and Curator,  through mentoring and apprenticeship, the student will be encouraged to develop the skills necessary to enter the arts & culture sector with the confidence to find the best opportunities for their future career development, whether that is with us or elsewhere.
While the ideal candidate might have achieved education to degree level, this is not a requisite. The position does require a post-secondary intern with some demonstrable design skills, a working knowledge of Adobe software plus a keen interest in art history as well as contemporary art.
Youth from any one of the following related fields of study or work experience would benefit from this position: Visual Communications, Fine Arts, Visual Arts, Art History and Visual Culture, Creative and Critical Studies, Media and Popular Culture, Theatre, Film, Animation, Graphic Design, advertising, business studies. A non-graduate with events, marketing or commercial business experience and a strong interest in art & art history could also benefit from this experience.


 
 
Position Responsibilities

With support and guidance from the Gallery Manager and the Curator, the Gallery Assistant will:

  • Staff the front desk, act as first point of contact for gallery visitors, answering questions and queries about exhibitions and general information on gallery programming and events.
  • Provide in-person and online gallery tours to interested individuals or groups, with the ability to share relevant knowledge and understanding of current exhibitions.
  • Work with the Gallery Manager and Gallery Curator on program creation that supports the exhibitions including, artist videos, gallery guides, educational materials.
  • Lead communications with volunteers on technical directions for the switching on and closing down of any digital media/ audio visual equipment and special lighting for exhibitions, creating instruction sheets where required.
  • Using Adobe suite (InDesign, Photoshop) design, create and distribute marketing materials for each exhibition.
  • Update website content. Create and distribute bi-weekly gallery newsletter
  • Plan and create engaging social media content, maximizing community reach, through the development of a social media strategy.
  • Communications with staff & volunteer teams; monitor and update schedules in When I Work (on-line software)
  • Contact and Membership database work will include updating information and generating reports to analyze trends and activities
  • Keep accurate records of attendance and visitor feedback. Gather and present engagement numbers from digital content including social media and Youtube engagement, providing a monthly report to the board of directors.
  • Respond to Gallery telephone calls and emails on a regular basis, in a timely manner
  • Work with volunteers to ensure the maintenance and cleaning of the Gallery spaces to meet COVID-19 protocols, ensuring that visitors are aware of current protocols through up to date signage.

This role will provide opportunities for students to develop skills and abilities in a wide range of competencies including:
  • Well-developed communication skills to verbally express ideas, concepts and information to a wide variety of audiences, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to work within a team, interpersonal skills to build on each other's strengths and manage work and required deadlines.
  • Knowledge of art, art history, art techniques in relation to the exhibitions on offer at the gallery. Developing the ability to illicit ideas from the content into viable educational and activity based materials.
  • Create learning outcomes and assess their effectiveness in a learning environment, through mentorship and support from fellow team members.
  • Measure effectiveness of marketing or promotional activities by analyzing data and engagement and providing feedback on improvements.
  • Exposure to learning new technologies and ways of engaging remotely with community, researching new technologies and finding ways to adapt current programming to a digital format.
  • Public speaking skills through facilitating and assisting in events which engage community members either online or in-person.
  • Project management skills through organizing of educational materials and events, including effective use of time, ability to pivot and change depending on needs of organization or changes in public health requirements.

 

Requirements

The qualifications for this position include the following:

  • Proven ability to work with a variety of on-line media platforms and programs

  • Knowledge of and skills with social media and other basic marketing platforms.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Outstanding planning and problem-solving skills.
  • Experience working with a variety of community groups
  • Evidence of strong leadership skills

  • Demonstrated design skills using Adobe suite - you may be asked to bring a sample of your work

  • Friendly, enthusiastic and positive attitude.







 

Position Details

The anticipated start date is May 1, 2021
 
The position will consist of 30 hours per week for up to 23 weeks (pending funding)
 
Flexibility will be required regarding working hours schedule
 
There may be some weekends, evenings, and statuary holiday required.
 
Salary details will be covered at the interview stage.
