Beginning Painting

Start painting and Stop thinking about painting! Simplify the process, learn quick tools for value, colour, composition and sketching,  learn to see as an artist, paint from life and photos. We’ll be doing lots of exercises to improve your skills!

After School Art Class (ages 6-11) with Tina Knooihuizen

Art Classes for children aged 6 through 11 are being offered at the ART HOUSE on Mondays,  3:10-4:40pm.

The class will run through out the year with a break for term holidays - contact tdkpicsart@gmail.com for dates and other details

There will be two public exhibitions in the ART HOUSE Pop Up Gallery, of the children's art work completed throughout the year. Reception and invites included. 

Cost is 15.00/ class,
​(to be paid in two instalments of $150.00 for the year)

The class will explore the use of different art mediums that children may otherwise not have the opportunity to try. A little art history will be thrown into the mix also.

LCAG/ Cool Arts: Teen and Transitioning Class

Wednesdays 1:00- 2:00


Cool Arts Society is a non profit organization based in Kelowna. This fall we are partnering with LCAG to provide fine art classes for GESS students in their Resource Program. The classes will take place at The Art House adjacent to Lake Country Art Gallery.  We will work with a variety of materials and all projects will be adapted to each individual's ability level.  The class will be taught by instructors Tina Knooihuizen and Neena Sood. 

The cost for the classes will be $2.00 per class, payable at the beginning of the term. The total cost per student for the fall term will be $20.00. All materials will be provided. 

Students who participate in the program will have their work exhibited at the Intergenerational Show at LCAG next spring. There will also be an opportunity to show their work at the Pop Up Gallery at the Art House sometime in the new year.

Subjects covered are understanding realistic light & shadows in your artwork, plus the importance of designing good value structure. So much easier understanding in Black & White than when working in colour. Workshop suitable for  both Beginner and Intermediate Artists.
 
Exploring Soft Pastels Series
Saturday, January 23, 30, & February 6, 2016 10am-4pm (one hour for lunch)
Workshop Fee per Saturday: $115.00 includes all art supplies. 
Learn the foundational skills of working with this versatile, colourful medium enjoyed by many of the Impressionist Artists. Participants will learn about materials, techniques and various application methods while following Marlene’s simple warm-up exercises and step-by-step demonstrations of a variety of interesting subject matter. Composition, shading, highlights and aerial perspective will also be reviewed as students learn basic colour theory while experiencing confidence in creating with pastels. Participants may register for all three Workshops or individual Saturdays of their choice. Each Workshop will have new projects for participants to be inspired and complete. Workshops suitable for  both Beginner and Intermediate Artists.
 
Exploring Oil Pastels
Saturday, February 13, 2016 10am-4pm (one hour for lunch)
Workshop Fee: $115.00 includes all art supplies. 
Join us to have fun creating with Oil Pastels. Displaying rich and intense colours with buttery strokes, experience why this medium was a favorite of Picassos. Art projects will be inspired by nature while learning techniques unique to this medium such as colour blending, sgraffito and pointillism. Workshop suitable for  both Beginner and Intermediate Artists.

Encaustics Basics with Angela Hansen - Aug 16

This all-day workshop will allow participants to explore various techniques with the  fascinating medium of encaustics (wax-based paint). Topics covered include: studio safety, iron and stylus techniques, brushwork, accretion, and layering.

This workshop is suitable for complete beginners or for those who have some experience with encaustics but wish to learn more or gain more experience with a variety of techniques. 

Equipment available and used in the workshop is: crock pots, hotplates, styluses, irons, torches and heat guns.

The instructor supplies all equipment and supplies, however students may wish to bring 
a few things of their own: 

  • Small objects such as buttons, beads, wire, and fabric for embedding
  • Photographs, drawings or photocopies for layering/embedding
  • Suitable substrates such as **unprimed wooden panels/cradled panels, 
  • **unprimed stretched canvas, particle board-type panels, and good quality watercolor or printmaking paper. ** Substrates primed with acrylic-based gesso are incompatible with encaustic mediums
  • PearlEx pigment powders
  • Pan pastels
  • Your own heat gun and/or handheld torch
  • Drawing mediums such as graphite and water soluble crayons

The instructor will also have new encaustic supplies and equipment available for students to purchase after the workshop

Lake Country artist Angela Hansen attended the Emily Carr University of Art and 

Design where she earned a Bachelor of Design; she then worked as a freelance designer 

and in small print shops for a few years before earning her teaching degree from the 

University of Victoria. Angela has been an art teacher in the Central Okanagan for the 

past 15 years and currently teaches at George Elliot Secondary.

Angela has been working with encaustics for over 10 years and enjoys the diversity of 

this intriguing medium. It is warm, luminous, amazingly durable and highly addictive to 

work with!
